Kamphaeng Phet and Northern Neighbours

Kamphaeng Phet is a province in the north west of Thailand inhabited by less than 700,000 people. The main occupation is manufacturing followed by farming, tourism and other services. In the west (near Myanmar) are the Shan Hills and to the east the lower situated farmlands in the river-lands/plains. Most of the land is primarily used for agricultural purposes (76%) and 24% is still in a more or less natural state (primary or secondary forest). In and around the province several areas have been designated as National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary. The province is 8608 square km of which approximately 15% has some sort of environmental protection law. Most protected areas are situated at the higher altitudes in the west. The area has a rich history, many old temples and fortresses can be found of which some are classified as UNESCO world heritage.
